First Reading: Philemon 1:7-20
For I have had great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
Wherefore though I have much confidence in Christ Jesus to command you what is right, for love's sake I rather appeal, as Paul an old man and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my chains, who was formerly unprofitable to you but now is profitable both to me and to you, whom I have sent back to you. Receive him as my own heart.
Whom I would have kept with me, that in your place he might minister to me in the chains of the gospel, but without your counsel I would do nothing, that your good deed might not be as of necessity but voluntary.
For perhaps he departed for a season that you might receive him again forever, no longer as a servant but instead of a servant, a most dear brother, especially to me, but how much more to you both in the flesh and in the Lord.
If therefore you count me as a partner, receive him as myself. And if he has wronged you in anything or owes you, put that to my account. I, Paul, have written it with my own hand, I will repay it, not to say to you that you owe me your own self also. Yes, brother, let me have joy of you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalms 146:7, 8-9a, 9bc-10
R. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob. or Alleluia.
Alleluia: John 15:5
Gospel: Luke 17:20-25
And being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said: The kingdom of God comes not with observation, neither shall they say: Behold here, or behold there. For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
And He said to His disciples: The days will come when you shall desire to see one day of the Son of Man, and you shall not see it. And they will say to you: See here, and see there. Do not go after them, nor follow them. For as lightning flashing from under heaven shines unto the parts that are under heaven, so shall the Son of Man be in His day.
But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
Reflection
The Pharisees ask: When will the kingdom of God come? They want a date, a sign. Jesus says: The kingdom does not come with watching and pointing - Behold here, behold there. The kingdom of God is within you.
What does that kingdom look like? The psalm tells us - God frees the prisoner, enlightens the blind, lifts up those who are cast down, feeds the hungry, protects the stranger, the widow, the fatherless. That is God's reign becoming visible.
Paul shows it in real life. He begs Philemon - receive Onesimus not as a slave but as a beloved brother. If he owes you anything, put it on my account. I will repay it. That is the kingdom inside a relationship - forgiveness, dignity, paying another's debt.
Remain in Christ the vine, and you will bear much fruit. Do not run after every voice that says here or there. Live the kingdom today in one act of welcome, one debt forgiven.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the vine and I am the branch. Let your kingdom live within me. Free me from seeking signs elsewhere while ignoring your presence here. Teach me to receive others not as servants but as brothers and sisters, to forgive debts and to bear fruit that remains. Reign in my heart today. Amen.
