During the Fourth Week of Easter, we go back to the Last Supper and spend a few weeks thinking about what Jesus said to His disciples on that Holy Thursday evening. Today, ask yourself this question: "Are you blessed?" Jesus says that you are blessed if you understand and do what He teaches His disciples. So, what did He teach them?
Jesus showed His disciples what it means to be a servant by washing their feet. His actions spoke louder than words. The disciples were amazed by this act, and at first, Peter didn't want Jesus to do it. It's clear that this humble act of service, where Jesus lowered Himself before His disciples, left a big impact on them.
The way the world sees greatness is very different from what Jesus taught. The world thinks that greatness is about making yourself look good in front of others, trying to show off how amazing you are. The world's idea of greatness is often driven by a fear of what others might think and a desire to be praised by everyone. But Jesus wants us to understand that true greatness comes from serving others. We need to humble ourselves before others, lift them up, honor them, and show them love and respect. By washing their feet, Jesus completely rejected the world's idea of greatness and called His disciples to do the same.
Understanding humility can be tricky sometimes. Jesus knew this when he said, "If you get this..." He knew that it's not easy for his disciples, or any of us, to see the value in humbling ourselves and serving others. But if you do grasp humility, you'll be "blessed" when you practice it. You may not be praised by the world, but you'll be truly blessed in the eyes of God.
Dear Lord, thank you for showing us how to love by serving others with humility. Please help me learn this virtue and live it every day. Please help me to love others selflessly, just like You love us all.
